Captain Marvel (2019)

Marvel’s Captain Marvel is a superhero film starring Brie Larson as the main Carol Danvers. Marvel’s first superhero film with a female as the lead is so much more than your average superhero film. Brie Larson brings this character to life and fans were not disappointed.

“Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls,” Marvel.

Captain Marvel is the best Marvel film, yet. Everything about this film was perfect. The visuals, the casting, the characters, the storyline. Captain Marvel is almost an origin story. For Carol, of course. But also, for a side of SHIELD we’re familiar with today. For Nick Fury and the Avengers Initiative. We get some pretty amazing surprises in this film, as well. *SPOILER* How Nick Fury’s eye came to be. No one could be disappointed by that.

Brie Larson quite literally shines. She is spectacular in the role of Carol Danvers. Carol is possibly the most powerful superhero in the MCU.

I believe I speak for everyone when I say I can’t wait for her to beat Thanos.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)

Based on the historical novel of the same name, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society does not disappoint. Another review for a Netflix original. I watched this movie due to the casting of Michiel Huisman (The Haunting of Hill House, 2:22, Game of Thrones) and was glad I did. This historical-fiction romance movie was spectacular. It was well-written, well-acted, and overall well-done. Netflix has definitely been stepping it up.

The movie, set in the 1940s England years after the war, follows Juliette Ashton as she travels to the small island of Guernsey to participate in a book club, with the hope of featuring them in her London Times article. Once there, she uncovers the mystery of the founder of the club and even falls in love.

The casting in this movie alone made it spectacular. The writing was beautiful and sad. And the character development was amazing. I have no complaints about this movie.

The scenery, the romance, the sadness. All of these things are what makes this movie so amazing. I can say that it is definitely a hard movie to beat. It has such a wonderful old-timey feel, which sets it apart from other movies of its genre.

I’d like to keep this review short and just tell you to watch it. Every detail about this movie was beautiful. Words cannot describe how spectacular this movie is, so simply watch it for yourself and understand. You simply cannot understand until you have seen it.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

Okay, so I’m a little late to review this one, as it came out in October of 2018. But it was such a great show that I couldn’t just skip over reviewing it. The Haunting of Hill House is the third adaptation of the book of the same name by Shirley Jackson. However, it is more of a loosely based adaptation. The Netflix show more takes inspiration from the book. In my opinion, this is why the show is so great. It takes multiple ideas from the book and remakes and then puts its own spin on it. Such as the addition of several characters and their relation.

I do not usually watch horror shows, not for lack of trying to. There had never been a horror show interesting enough for me to watch. Hill House definitely changed that. Hill House is something you have never seen before on TV. I don’t know how to explain it other than it puls it in and doesn’t let you go, much like the house. It’s the best combination of scary, exciting, on your-seat terror, sadness, and a hint of happiness. I was not bored for one second of this show.

Hill House first pulls you in with its horror, right off the bat. It definitely doesn’t start off slow, that’s for sure. Each episode is kind of like an insight to all of the characters of the Crain family. We first get to into Steven’s mind, my personal favourite. The episodes play out mainly like a flashback-present type of show, similar to This Is Us. We see the forsaken Hill HOuse in flashbacks and then get to see each member of the family many years later, in the present day. It is interesting because we get to see how the house and all of its horror affected the family. We know right off the bat that the mother is dead, most likely from something within in the house. And then we get to see how that plays along and everything came to be.

Throughout the show, we see the development and backstory to all of the Crain family members. I do not want to spoil anything, but I will say that Nell’s episode is by far the saddest. No kidding. This entire show had me in tears, so often I forgot what it was like to not cry every second. Whether it was from fear or sadness, the tears kept coming. I have never seen a show with such an amazing mix of sadness and horror. Most of all, what I liked the best about this show was its poeticness. Every line spoken was like poetry. Hill House had such a well-written script. It was elegant and real. It really pulled you in.

In conclusion, I can not brag about this show enough. It was so well-balanced and realistic. Everything about it, right down to the colours, was hypnotizing. 10/10 recommend!

The Punisher Season 2 (2019)

The most recent Marvel Netflix show had made its release and it could not have been better. January 18th marked the release of Marvel’s The Punisher season 2. After such a spectacular season 1, many were excited for what was to come. And no one was disappointed. Season 2 outshines the first season, which I had not thought possible.

The new season’s plotline goes as follows:

The second season of the American web television series The Punisher, which is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, revolves around Frank Castle saving a girl from being murdered, forcing him to decide if he should embrace his life as the Punisher.

The season was extremely exciting. With our favourite returning cast members Jon Bernthal, Amber Rose Revah, Ben Barnes, and Jason R. Moore. As well as the new addition of Josh Stewart, Giorgia Wigham, and Floriana Lima.

The season picks up around a year after the events of season 1. Madani is still reeling from the situation of Billy Russo. Frank Castle is a traveling man who makes a stop along the way and runs into some trouble with the newest addition to the show, Amy. Billy Russo is in the hospital with missing pieces of his memory, getting help from his psychologist Krista Dumont. Season 2 shows Frank chasing not only Billy but also a religious man with mixed morals, John Pilgrim. Oh, and Mahoney shows up quite a bit, as well. We also get a lovely appearance from Frank’s favourite, Karen Page, shining as always.

The season is action packed and starts right off the bat. It didn’t drag on and was constantly exciting and nerve-wracking. The action never stops. We get exciting scenes, such as a pretty gruesome fight in a gym, and we get to see Frank finally put an end to Billy.

Ben Barnes was a spectacular villain, of course, this is no surprise. But we also get a great appearance from Josh Stewart as John Pilgrim. Watching his character was a very conflicting thing. And by the end, you don’t know whether to feel bad for him or hate him. Giorgia Wigham’s Amy Bendix was a great addition to the cast. We get to see a little fatherliness to Frank that many would’ve liked to have seen with his daughter, if not for the devastating death of his entire family.

Another part of this season I greatly enjoyed was the score. The music in this season was astounding. It seemed to magnify the scenes. It was such a welcome part of this season.

So in my opinion, season 2 of Marvel’s The Punisher gets 10 out of 10 and I recommend to all. Go catch The Punisher Season 2 on Netflix.

Aquaman (2018)

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Aquaman released on December 21st. I am sure I don’t speak for just myself when I say I rushed to the theater to watch it. After the lackluster Justice League, I still had high hopes for Aquaman. Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) first made his appearance as Aquaman in the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, we didn’t really get to see him until his appearance in Justice League. Though I can’t say that really counts either. Justice League was not a success. It’s plot holes and CGI barely made the movie watchable, and yet, I pulled through the movie for Aquaman. And as it turns out, Arthur Curry had very few lines and very little screen time. What a wasted opportunity. So when I heard Jason Momoa was getting his own movie as Aquaman, I couldn’t be happier. Finally, Arthur Curry would get the screen time he deserved.

After the colossal disaster that was Justice League, I still wasn’t worried Aquaman would have the same fate. Maybe it was the director, James Wan, or maybe it was Jason Momoa, who I have appreciated since his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. Whatever it was, I knew Aquaman would be a good one. Arthur Curry has been a loved character since his days in Smallville, so we had to give him the appreciation he deserved.

Aquaman had spectacular casting. With appearances from Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson. Not to mention Amber Heard who nailed the role of Mera. It was bound to be a good movie. Every actor/actress was spectacular in their role. We have never seen a villain as well developed as Patrick Wilson as King Orm. Nicole Kidman, though not having as much screen time, was such a delightful addition to the cast. Amber Heard was striking as Mera and worked amazingly along side Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. Black Manta was a powerful villain with a cause in this film. The acting in this film was deserving of an award.

Aquaman also won where Justice League had failed in CGI, I mean, lets not forgot that disaster of a mustache. But Justice League’s villain also looked like something straight out of a video game, it had no balance. Aquaman definitely takes the award for CGI and visual effects, which is hard to accomplish given that most of the movie takes place underwater. Yet, Aquaman nailed this.

And let us talk about the scenery. The colors that were shown in this film were extraordinary. Every scene in this film was so colorful. I couldn’t wait to see the visual effects in every scene. It is definitely something you appreciate in the movie. The sparring scene with the fire is an example of this. Aquaman killed it with its visual effects.

Now the choreography. That was definitely an enjoyable part. There were so many scenes in this film where I was in awe due to that. The fighting scene with Mera, the use of her powers. The end battle with King Orm and Arthur. I was in shock of the choreography. Every fight scene was incredible.

The character development is another thing I brag about. King Orm was an enjoyable villain because he had such an interesting backstory. Black Manta was almost relatable. You really feel for his backstory and why he does what he does. You might even root for him sometimes. Mera and Arthur were such a great pair, their development, not only individually, but together was such a great story.

Overall, my opinion on Aquaman is A++. I recommend it to everyone. There were so many great aspects of this film. This is the kind of movie that deserves all of the awards.
